HTC launched its flagship Android phone, Sensation, in India. The phone, which sports a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) screen, runs on a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor.

It's the third dual-core smartphone to be launched in India after Samsung Galaxy S II and LG Optimus 2X.

"HTC Sensation is an exceptional smartphone that will win customers with its unique blend of functionality, usability and style. It will create a paradigm shift in the overall smartphone category with a brilliant experience," said Lennard Hoornik, president for south Asia, HTC.

The smartphone is priced Rs.32,700. However, this is the MRP and in the market both phones can be purchased for around Rs 30,000.

HTC says Sensation has an 8 mega pixel rear camera with dual-LED flash. The phone can play as well as record 1080P videos. It has 1 GB internal storage and 768 MB RAM. The phone runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) that has been customized by HTC with its proprietary interface called Sense 3.0.

At the launch event in New Delhi, HTC claimed Sensation has been designed to provide "superior multimedia" experience to users. The phone's screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9 which means that most of widescreen films will fill the entire screen and will not have black bars under and above the video. The phone also comes with "instant camera capture". This enables faster shutter speed, allowing users to click photographs "faster".

'Google may pay price for hacking claims'

Beijing: Google has become a "political tool" vilifying the Chinese government, an official Beijing newspaper said on Monday, warning that the US Internet giant's statements about hacking attacks traced to China could hurt its business.
The tough warning appeared in the overseas edition of the People's Daily, the leading newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, indicating that political tensions between the United States and China over Internet security could linger.
Last week, Google said it had broken up an effort to steal the passwords of hundreds of Google email account holders, including U.S. government officials, Chinese human rights advocates and journalists. It said the attacks appeared to come from China.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry rejected those accusations, and the party newspaper warned Google against playing a risky political game.
By saying that Chinese human rights activists were among the targets of the hacking, Google was "deliberately pandering to negative Western perceptions of China, and strongly hinting that the hacking attacks were the work of the Chinese government," the People's Daily overseas edition, a small offshoot of the main domestic paper, said in a front-page commentary.
"Google's accusations aimed at China are spurious, have ulterior motives, and bear malign intentions," said the commentary, written by an editor at the paper.
"Google should not become overly embroiled in international political struggle, playing the role of a tool for political contention," the paper added.
"For when the international winds shift direction, it may become sacrificed to politics and will be spurned by the marketplace," it said, without specifying how Google's business could be hurt.
The latest friction with Google could bring Internet policy back to the foreground of US-China relations, reprising tensions last year when the Obama administration took up Google's complaints about hacking and censorship from China.
Google partly pulled out of China after that dispute. Since then, it has lost more share to rival Baidu Inc in China's Internet market, the world's largest by user numbers with more than 450 million users.
Google last week that the hacking attacks appeared to come from Jinan, the capital of China's eastern Shandong province and home to an intelligence unit of the People's Liberation Army.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates over the weekend warned that Washington was prepared to use force against cyber-attacks it considered acts of war.
In February, overseas Chinese websites, inspired by anti-authoritarian uprisings across the Arab world, called for protests across China, raising Beijing's alarm about dissent and prompting tightened censorship of the Internet.
China already blocks major foreign social websites such as Facebook and Twitter. more

Facebook facial recognition sparks concerns

San Francisco: Facebook has quietly expanded the availability of technology to automatically identify people in photos, renewing concerns about the privacy practices of the world's top social networking service.
The feature, which Facebook automatically enabled for Facebook users, has been expanded from the United States to "most countries", Facebook said on its official blog on Tuesday.
Its "Tag Suggestions" feature uses facial recognition technology to speed up the process of labeling friends and acquaintances that appear in photos posted on Facebook.
The company's rollout of the technology has raised eyebrows in some circles. Internet security consultant firm Sophos published a post on its company blog on Tuesday saying that many Facebook users are reporting that the site has enabled the facial recognition option in the last few days without giving users any notice.
"Yet again, it feels like Facebook is eroding the online privacy of its users by stealth," wrote Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos.
Facebook, which announced in December that it planned to introduce the service in the United States, acknowledged on Tuesday that the feature was in fact now more widely available.
When asked about the Sophos blog post, Facebook said in an emailed statement that "we should have been more clear with people during the roll-out process when this became available to them."
The statement noted that the photo-tagging suggestions are only made when new photos are added to Facebook, that only friends are suggested and that users can disable the feature in their privacy settings.
The company did not respond to requests for further comment.
While other photo software and online services such as Google Inc's Picasa and Apple Inc's iPhoto use facial recognition technology, the use of the technology on an Internet social network like Facebook, which counts more than 500 million users, could raise thorny privacy issues.
Marc Rotenberg, President of the non-profit privacy advocacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center, noted that Apple's iPhoto software gave users control over facial recognition technology by letting them elect whether or not to use the technology with their personal photo collections.
Facebook's technology, by contrast, operates independently, analyzing faces across a broad swathe of newly uploaded photos.
Rotenberg said such a system raised questions about which personally identifiable information, such as email addresses, would become associated with the photos in Facebook's database. And he criticized Facebook's decision to automatically enable the facial-recognition technology for Facebook users.
"I'm not sure that's the setting that people would want to choose. A better option would be to let people opt-in," he said.

Last year the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint about Facebook's privacy practices with the US Federal Trade Commission, which Rotenberg said was still pending. He noted that he planned to take a close look at Facebook's new announcement involving facial recognition technology. more

Google doodles a digital guitar on Les Paul's birthday

New Delhi: Google has put up a digital version of the legendary electric guitar, the Gibson Les Paul, in place of its logo to celebrate the 96th birthday of the country and jazz guitarist, songwriter and inventor, Lester William Polsfuss, better known as Les Paul.
The Google doodle in honour of Les Paul is playable by hovering the cursor over the doodle. Les Paul was known for his innovative and experimental guitar playing style.
Born on June 9, 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Les Paul developed an interest in music at the age of eight when he started to play the harmonica, followed by banjo and finally moved to the love of his life - the guitar.
Google doodles a digital guitar on Les Paul's birthday
He had formed his own Les Paul Trio in the 1930s and performed long with Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in the 1940s. He also had his own radio program.
He designed a solid body electric guitar in 1941, but it finally went on sale by the Gibson Guitar Company in 1952. He also pioneered the development of multi-track recording and invented the eight-track tape recorder and the technique of overdubbing.
In 1988 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2005 in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
He continued to play and perform live well into his 90s. In 2006, aged 90, he won two Grammys. Les Paul died on August 12, 2009. He was 94.
Google has now become more frequent with animated and interactive doodles. Of the last 10 Google doodles, five included animations or were interactive.
The Google doodle had first gone interactive in May 2010 to celebrate the 30th birthday of the popular Pac-Man game.
For a dozen years, Google has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a doodle. The Google doodles, an artistic take on the Google logo, have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google doodle team has put out commemorative doodles on numerous events of international or national importance, ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history. Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010. Some appear globally, and others are tailored for local markets. more
